Tmj Pain Can Look Different For Everyone
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint - the joint where the jaw meets the skull. The term TMJ itself does not describe one specific pathology, and jaw symptoms can vary considerably from person to person.
Some people seeking TMJ treatment in Brisbane have pain directly around the joint or surrounding muscles. Others describe constant tightness, clenching, fatigue through the jaw, headaches, or a feeling that they are always biting or contracting the muscles.
How I Approach Tmj And Jaw Pain
The first step is understanding what you are experiencing rather than assuming every jaw problem is the same.
I assess the jaw and the surrounding muscular system and consider whether the symptoms appear predominantly muscular, joint-related or influenced by other factors. Where appropriate, I use hands-on treatment and education to help reduce sensitivity and muscular tension.
Shockwave Therapy For The Jaw
One treatment I use for some TMJ and jaw-pain presentations is radial shockwave therapy applied to appropriate muscles around the jaw.
In my clinical experience, this can be very effective for some people, particularly when muscular tightness and tenderness are prominent. However, individual responses vary and I do not assume that shockwave will be the right treatment for everyone.
Treatment may also involve remedial work, needling where appropriate, advice around aggravating behaviours and other strategies based on what is found during the assessment.
What To Expect
As with other musculoskeletal conditions, approximately four to six sessions is a useful general guide rather than a fixed treatment promise. Some jaw presentations respond more quickly and others are more complex.
We assess your response from session to session and decide whether continuing treatment, modifying the approach or involving another health professional is appropriate.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does TMJ mean?
TMJ means temporomandibular joint. People often use 'TMJ' to describe jaw pain or dysfunction, but it is the name of the joint rather than one specific diagnosis.
Can shockwave therapy help jaw tightness?
It can be helpful for selected presentations in my experience, particularly where muscular tenderness and tightness are significant. It is not guaranteed to work for every person.
Can you treat jaw clenching?
Treatment may help reduce muscular discomfort associated with clenching, but it is also important to consider why the clenching is occurring and whether other management is needed.
