Plantar Fasciitis & Plantar Heel Pain Treatment Brisbane
Plantar Fasciitis Isn'T Always Just 'Inflammation'
Plantar fasciitis is a familiar label for pain under the heel and foot, but it can oversimplify what is actually happening.
The plantar fascia can certainly become irritated, but persistent plantar heel pain is not always explained by inflammation alone. The term plantar fasciopathy is sometimes used for longer-standing changes, and there are also other structures and possible nerve-related contributors that can produce similar symptoms.
That is why my approach to plantar fasciitis treatment in Brisbane starts with a broader assessment rather than treating the diagnosis as the complete explanation.
Settle The Foot - Then Look Up The Chain
Initially, the priority may be to reduce pain around the foot, ankle and lower leg so that walking and loading become easier.
Depending on the presentation, I may use shockwave therapy, deep tissue treatment, dry needling and other hands-on techniques to help settle the painful area.
Once symptoms are more manageable, I assess how the foot is being loaded and what is happening further up the chain.
The Role Of The Hip, Knee, Ankle And Foot
Foot stability, ankle control and the ability to maintain the arch under load can all be relevant. I also look at the knee and hip because reduced strength or control higher up the leg can contribute to how much demand ends up at the foot.
For some people, improving hip strength is an important part of the solution. For others, calf capacity, foot strength, ankle movement or activity management may be more relevant.
The point is not to assume that the hip 'caused' the heel pain. It is to work out why this particular foot may be struggling with its current load.
Rebuilding Capacity
As pain reduces, targeted exercise becomes increasingly important. The aim is to progressively improve the strength and stability of the foot and lower limb so that the tissues can tolerate everyday activity, work and exercise more comfortably.
This combination of symptom relief and progressive loading is why I prefer a comprehensive approach rather than repeatedly treating the sole of the foot alone.
What To Expect
Approximately four to six sessions is a reasonable general guide for many musculoskeletal pain conditions, although plantar heel pain can sometimes take longer because the foot is loaded with almost every step.
Treatment frequency and rehabilitation are adjusted according to how irritable the symptoms are and how well the foot is tolerating increased load.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is plantar fasciitis always inflammation?
No. The term is commonly used for plantar heel pain, but longer-standing presentations can involve more than simple inflammation.
Why would you assess my hip for foot pain?
The hip can influence lower-limb control and loading. It is one part of the chain I assess when it appears relevant.
Does shockwave therapy help plantar fasciitis?
Shockwave therapy can be useful for selected plantar heel pain presentations. I combine it with assessment and progressive rehabilitation rather than relying on it alone.
